Building bridges to your neighbours, here and beyond.
Host Tribes and Nations at your church or community group.
Tribes and Nations is building a Fair Trade market bridge between the developing world and the west. If you believe in taking action to reduce poverty and to be a voice for fairtrade as a church or community group, we would like to partner with you in this bridge building.
By hosting an event you can bring new people to your group, introduce a dynamic way of caring for the poor and see the wide range of Fair Trade products.
The combinations of culture, a discussion of poverty, relaxing over a cup of coffee, with an opportunity to purchase quality goods, attract many and can be a great ice breaker.
Together with you, we want the event to be fun and full of colour. You may wish to choose a theme for the event, decorating according to one of our partners cultural influences, while weaving music and food into the background to complete the picture. We will provide a packet of Fairtrade tea and coffee for your guests to sample and enjoy.
Through this event you are impacting your communities thinking, sending ripples out into all the world.
Steps to Success
1. Speak to the leadership of your group. A key part of this is the challenge to use Fairtrade in your group on a regular basis. If these discussions have taken place, prior to the event, a more significant, meaningful result can follow.
2. Call or e-mail us with your dates (at least one month in advance).
3. Advertise the event via announcements, notice boards, newsletters and leaflets that we will send you. Please include in your advertising that products will be available to buy on the day.
4. Fine tune with your speaker (Grant or Mignonne) the exact aim of the day.
Testimonials
Sita Matthews of Carlton (Sydney) said, " A big thank you to Mignonne for coming to St Cuthbert's Anglican Church and meeting with the women from our playtime as well as giving a talk in the afternoon. It was challenging for our church members in thinking through how our shopping habits can affect people in less developed countries, and proved to be a great opportunity to invite people to our church. For those who are not Christian in our community there is often a perception that Christians are not concerned with Global issues. Having Tribes and Nations visit our church not only helped to dispel this myth, but gave an opportunity for people in our community to see how they can help tackle poverty overseas."
Nerilee of Surry Hills said, “People came to St Michael's to drink Fair Trade coffee in a coffee shop atmosphere while browsing other Fair Trade merchandise that Grant had on display. Grant spoke at the church services encouraging us to take seriously the Bible's perspective on workers being paid their worth and God hearing the cries of the unpaid...”
Helping with costs
If your group is launching the fairtrade concept, with a commitment to use and sell our coffees, we are happy to come at no cost. For all other events there are preparation and travel costs to bear which are only sometimes covered by the sales we make. As we are not a charity these costs are not covered by outside support.
In the table following we have estimated these costs and would appreciate your help in this.
1. For Penrith and the Blue Mountains $50
2. For Sydney metro area $100
3. Central Coast and the Wollongong region $150
4. For other regional areas $200.
For events creating $1000+ of sales we will donate back 10% of all those sales. Through thorough promotion most costs will be taken care of by this donation.
