THE  GROWERS: OCFCU
The Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union is named after the Oromia region in Ethiopia. Established in 1999, the men and women of OCFU are the growers, processors and exporters of high quality, organic Fairtrade Arabica coffee.
Approximately  617,700 households are involved in coffee production which is shade grown and  bird friendly. All of the coffee is of the Arabica type

The Region of Oromia
Oromia  is one of the nine ethnic divisions of Ethiopia. Covering 353,632 km2 from the east to the southwest of the country, its population was estimated in 2002 at about twenty-four million, making it the largest state in terms of both population and land area. Around 90% of the population meet their daily needs from agriculture. The OCFU re one of the first unions in Ethiopia to be certified as fair trade.
Sixty-five percent of the country's coffee production is from this region
Demograhphically speaking 44.3% are Muslims, 41.3% Orthodox Christians, 8.6% Protestants, and 4.2% followers of traditional religions.

The Harrar Arabica Bean
The fair trade Harrar Arabica bean is grown on small peasant plots and farms in the Eastern part of the country near the old capital of Harrar, at about 1800 to 2000 metres. Harrar is a "handmade" coffee, processed carefully by the traditional dry method. It is grown on such a small scale and by such simple methods that it is free of chemicals, and like Yemen Mocha a good choice for those who wish a traditional organically grown coffee.
Harrar tends to be medium-bodied with acidic, rough tones.

FAIRTRADE - Improving lives
Seventy percent of the Union's profits from selling and exporting coffee are distributed back to the 115 cooperatives. The cooperatives then distribute these dividends back to the farmer-members or to reinvest in capacity building assets. The other 30 percent of the Union's profits are used for expansion, for reserves against poor harvest years, and for community development.
Farmers are not required to sell their coffee to the Cooperative Union. Thus, the success of the Union depends on a fair price to the farmer-members for their coffee.
Another way the Union shows its support for the farmers is by undertaking community improvement projects. In the past year four new schools were constructed as well as three health centers and two clean water supplies. By working together, farmer-members are able to pool their resources. This democratic system benefits individual farmers-members and their communities.
