UCA San Juan del Rio Coco, is a union of 8 co-operatives partnering under one umbrella. The co-op consists of 309 small scale producers of certified organic coffee, of whom 64 are women and 245 men. This high ratio of women is a rare thing in a South American co-op. The UN has made it plain that the involvement and education of  women is one of the keys  to sustainable development. Currently they produce a production volume of 690,000 bags (69 kilograms each) of coffee on farms totalling an area of 1022 square meters of certified organic coffee.

“With assistance from USAID, the cooperatives [UCA San Juan del Rio Coco] that make up this organization achieved both Fair Trade and organic certification and were able to sell 150,000 pounds of certified coffee at substantially higher prices than conventional coffee. The members of the union decided to invest part of their profits in social projects to benefit their families and the entire community.
